While AI can be beneficial there are many disadvantages and ethical concerns when using AI. In Alex Hughes's article about AI, he gives a background on how it works, “…it can’t deal with concepts that are too recent. World events that have occurred in the past year will be met with limited knowledge and the model can produce false or confused information occasionally” (Hughes, 2023). When ChatGPT first launched one of the biggest limitations was how recent the data it was trained on. Shortly after, there were 3rd party programs that allowed ChatGPT to access more recent data. Now most major chatbots have more up-to-date information or limited access to the internet. One of the uses on a list of use cases for chatbots was, “Tell ChatGPT what you’re writing about — whether it’s a poem, a news article, an email, or a college admissions essay, and you’ll get customized content that you can use in a wide variety of situations” (Marr, 2023). This is a major concern among educators and scholars for good reason. One big reason is that anyone can generate writing in seconds and use it for whatever, while it might not be perfect it may work for certain uses. The second reason is where the information comes from, authors are having their information taken without giving credit. This is a major concern in AI image generation which is another story. An article that focused on how ChatGPT fabricated a fake scandal states, “The problem: No such article existed. There had never been a class trip to Alaska. And Turley said he’d never been accused of harassing a student” (Verma & Oremus, 2023). It is very easy for people to get false information on the internet but with AI chatbots it is not only easier but also harder to know if the information is reliable. Some people may unknowingly believe information generated by AI or it may be used to deceive. An article that analyzed the use of AI as personal assistance discussed, “…there could also be a spillover effect, which would have the consequence of increasing the likelihood of humans behaving viciously toward other humans” (Yeung et al., 2023). People treat AI in ways they do not treat humans, this can open opportunities for this violence to be present in everyday interactions. AI does not have emotions or feelings you cannot learn how to teach beings with emotions. Sometimes it feels that some people do not treat people like humans, and it is made much easier to do that to AI. “However, it can pick up misinformation and present it as fact, and there are concerns that it lacks nuance and may be used for harmful requests” (Oxborrow, 2023). AI chatbots can only be as bad as humans since they are trained on information from humans. This only makes it easier for more people to use it for harm. There are also many ethical concerns when it comes to education. While cheat is nothing new it is made easier with AI. Although AI has its pros the many negatives cannot be overlooked instead there should be discussions to help people understand.
