Exploring Statistics and Data on Artificial Intelligence

There is a wide range of statistics that offer insight into how AI can be and how it is being used. There have been many tests on how well Chat GPT compares to humans in terms of tests; as well as correlations of AI usage for specific jobs because of what it can do. In an article that focuses on false information produced by ChatGPT, “…researchers induced Bard to produce wrong or hateful information 78 out of 100 times, on topics ranging from the Holocaust to climate change” (Verma & Oremus, 2023). AI can produce harmful information especially when that is the goal. Harmful information is a big concern that most people focus on, and while this is a legitimate concern other ways to get harmful or overlooked. It often feels that people forget that misinformation is everywhere and the only thing AI does is make it easier to find. Just as schools teach students how to find reliable sources; they should teach students about AI and how to properly use it. Forbes published an article about AI being banned and how it could be helpful, “The chatbot put out an 800-word essay in seconds, and although there were a few factual errors, a New Jersey AP English teacher gave it a passing grade of a B- to a C” (Johnson, 2023). AI has proven it capable to be capable of getting acceptable grades on assignments. This is the main factor in why teachers have such a negative outlook on AI. While there have been tools to detect AI writing it is still possible to use AI and not get detected. Of course, the material produced is not perfect, nothing ever is which makes it even harder to separate. The same article includes statistics that help understand the possible use of AI, “A study found at least 58% of high school students have committed plagiarism” (Johnson, 2023). Plagiarism is nothing new and has now been made easier with the introduction of AI. Using AI to generate whole essays bypasses the old plagiarism detectors since it uses patterns seen in the available text and mixes it up enough so the information sounds and looks correct. This is the most consistent why teachers are viewing how students are using AI in education. There are AI detectors that can tell if text is written by AI but those can also be bypassed. An article that focuses on the personal use of AI states, “As we write this article, Open AI just launched ChatGPT, which has drawn 1 million users in just 5 days” (Yeung et al., 2023). AI has gained much popularity from the media and when a product is made available, and the term AI is used people will go crazy for it. In movies and TV shows, artificial intelligence has been presented in a wide range of ways from very helpful to world-destroying. This widespread implantation of AI in media makes people want to experience what they have only seen before. A section from Oxborrow’s article talks about what AI can be used for which includes some important statistics, “Marketing and advertising professionals have the highest adoption of AI, with 37 per cent saying they use it, while 35 per cent of workers in technology and 30 per cent in consulting gave a positive response” (Oxborrow, 2023). Many professions can use AI to help them in their job, especially in the advertising field. Since AI is good at looking at patterns it can compute and provide helpful statistics to advertisers. That is one example of how AI can be used in a work environment but there are other small but helpful ways to use AI. With all the statistics available it is easy to see what people would benefit most and how it will be used.
